Baby dies after vaccination shots in Shenyang
A 4-month-old baby died after receiving his polio and DPT vaccinations in Shenyang, Liaoning Province early this week, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
Hao Yu was brought to a community clinic on Monday morning for his second shot of DPT vaccine and third shot of Polio vaccine. DPT is a compound vaccine against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus – infections that mostly threaten babies.
The boy received the shots at 11am and after 30 minutes of observation in the clinic, he was brought home. Shortly after coming home, the boy started crying and had trouble breathing. His lips turned purple and his hands and feet turned cold. He was immediately rushed to a big hospital, but died later of respiratory and heart failure.
The doctor who vaccinated the boy said there was nothing wrong with the boy and the procedure of his vaccination shots. The parents also signed an agreement for the shots.
The city's Tiexi District health bureau is investigating the producer of the DPT and polio vaccines. The DPT vaccine was manufactured in 2011 and the polio vaccine was produced in 2012, both within expiration date. The investigators said the vaccines were refrigerated according to storage standard and no evidence of mishandling was found.
The inspectors said more than 20 community clinics in the district gave the same batch of polio vaccine to about 400 children and the same batch of DPT vaccine to more than 8,000 children without a single case of complications. Citywide, only three children out of a total of 20,000 reported having a fever.
Tiexi District health official Zhang Yan said normal reactions to polio and DPT vaccines would be a fever or a rash. Allergic reactions to the vaccines are very rare and have not happened in the district for 10 years.
Shenyang medical experts said the boy died of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest, but they could not link his death with the vaccines. The city's drug administration is now testing the quality of the two vaccines. The result has not come out.
