Baby found in trash can

A NEWBORN boy is struggling for survival on a respiratory machine at a south China hospital after being dumped by his mother in a trash can with wounds across the body.

Police of Sanshui District in Guangdong Province's Foshan City yesterday caught the mother after checking security video at the dormitory building for Zhonglu Hotel in the district where the baby was discarded, police told yesterday's Guangzhou Daily.

The 19-year-old mother surnamed Zhou, a native of Hunan Province who served as a cashier at the hotel, confessed she had dumped the baby. Police are still investigating whether or how she had wounded the baby.

The baby was found by a patrolling hotel manager who heard baby crying from a trash can at midnight on Sunday, the hotel's vice general manager Lu Xiujuan told the newspaper.

The baby was wrapped with a plastic bag with cuts across his body, including seven to his neck.

Doctors with the hospital said the wounds could be made with sharp items such as glass.
