Baby girl emerges large into the world at 6.2 kilograms

A woman in eastern China’s Shandong Province yesterday delivered a super-size baby via Caesarean section, weighing 6.2 kilograms, the Qilu Evening News reported.

The baby girl set a record for being the heaviest newborn in the No. 3 People’s Hospital in the city of Xintai. The mother gained 21 kilograms to 116 kilograms while pregnant, said the report.

Both the mother and baby are in good condition, said a doctor at the hospital, adding that they could be discharged after a three-day observation.

The baby’s father, surnamed Wang, said he was so excited to welcome the “big” girl but he found her size hard to believe at first. Newborns normally weigh at 3 to 3.5 kilograms, and those over 4 kilograms are considered large.
