Baby rumors revive star couple gossip
HONG Kong actress Cecilia Cheung is rumored to be two months pregnant, sparking speculation that her troubled marriage to actor-singer Nicholas Tse is not yet over.
Rumors of Cheung's pregnancy came from an insider who said the actress' schedule for the second half of the year had been changed, according to yesterday's Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly.
Cheung is due to start work on the romantic comedy "The Lion Roars 2" next month and many fight scenes which would have involved her have been cut, the insider said.
According to other media reports, Cheung has bought a luxury villa worth HK$128 million (US$16.4 million) in preparation for her third baby, said to be a girl.
The couple, who have been married for five years, have two sons, aged four and one. Tse is reported to have said he also wanted a daughter.
If the rumors are true, Cheung's pregnancy would have preceded a row she had with Tse over her meeting with Hong Kong actor-singer Edison Chen on a flight last month.
She and Chen had kept their distance from each other after a lewd photo scandal had made them the center of gossip in 2008.
Cheung is said to have had a hard time saving her marriage after the scandal, with some Hong Kong media saying she had even threatened to leave with her sons in a desperate bid to win her husband's forgiveness.
With marital relations back to normal after the raunchy picture scandal, another twist came when Cheung and Chen were spotted sitting next to each other, chatting and taking snaps with their mobile phones on a flight to Hong Kong in May.
At about the same time, Hong Kong radio host Eileen Cha claimed that Cheung had demanded Tse sign over his properties to her and that the seemingly happy marriage was a mere facade for the sake of their children.
Then gossip about their disputes circulated widely, and there were some reports that Tse had signed a divorce agreement and was preparing for a custody battle over their sons.
However, Cheung's agent denied rumors of a pregnancy and of a divorce earlier this month.
Cheung missed an appearance due on June 18 in Sichuan Province because of depression, the event's organizer told Chinese Business View newspaper. She was said to have returned to Hong Kong after finishing filming in Guangdong Province.
Meanwhile, Tse's sister said on Sunday that Tse was in a good mood when they met in Malaysia.
Tse's father recently said the couple would be holding a press conference to dispel divorce rumors.
