Baby survives 3 days abandoned in gutter

A PREMATURE baby girl has survived three days on a roadside after her parents abandoned her, thinking she was dead.

Building workers in south China's Guangdong Province discovered the 14-day-old girl, taking her for dead. They were digging a hole to bury her when they heard faint cries, today's Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Police managed to trace her parents and handed the baby back, the newspaper said.

The baby, not yet named, was born a month premature on December 23 last year in Shenzhen City, her father Zhou Mingming told the newspaper.

Doctors said she suffered deformities to her brain and intestinal tract, he added. To better care for her, the parents decided to take her to their hometown in east China's Anhui Province.

On the way home, her grandpa discovered she was not breathing and thought she was dead. The parents left her at the roadside in Panyu City on January 2, following a custom in their hometown of dealing with dead babies, Zhou said.

Along with the baby, they left milk bottles, clothes and the parents' contact details.
