Baby-killing duo caught in Nanjing

POLICE in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, have caught two men suspected of killing a one-year-old boy and his babysitter and stealing 100,000 yuan (US$15,375) in cash and jewelry from the boy's home.

Police said the duo, aged 21 and 22, posing as delivery men, lured the babysitter to open the door while the apartment owners were away on May 17, Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.

One suspect pinned the babysitter, in her 60s, to the floor while the other began searching the room. When the woman tried to protest, they stabbed her to death. The pair heard the cries of the boy in the next room and killed him. A resident living in the same neighborhood said the boy may have suffocated to death as police said no blood was found in the room.

The suspects were caught on May 21 and May 22.

The boy's mother, 35, who quit her job to look after the baby, said she often receives delivery of online goods, which probably led the babysitter to drop her guard. Her husband is a businessman.
