Backpackers missing after 19 days in mountainous Heizhugou region
Three backpackers have been missing for 19 days after they went hiking in the mountainous Heizhugou region of Sichuan Province, Chengdu Business News reported.
Originally five backpackers arranged online to explore the scenic Heizhugou area in mid August. They gathered in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, on August 16 and reached Heizhugou later that day.
Three went missing on August 20 while the other two who got separated managed to find their way out of the mountains, the report said.
Police in Ebian Yi Nationality Autonomous County dispatched four rescue teams to find the missing backpackers on September 3, but the search has thus far come up empty.
Heizhugou, an original valley forest, is renowned as “China’s Bermuda Triangle” as compasses don’t work due to geomagnetic variations. Tourists are not advised to explore the area, which features dense vegetation and vast undeveloped areas.
