Bakery explosion kills 1, injures 12

ONE person was killed and 12 others injured when a bakery exploded in Henan Province yesterday, Dahe Daily reported.

Around 6:30pm last night, a chef, surnamed Peng, had just finished making a birthday cake at the bakery on the Zhongyuan University of Technology campus when he reported a strong gas smell. One of his co-workers then yelled there was a gas leak. Peng ran out of the bakery with four other colleagues just before the bakery exploded, the report said.

Despite hearing commands to immediately leave the building, a few students were still inside when the explosion occurred. One student, surnamed Li, told the newspaper he heard orders to leave when the blast knocked him unconscious. Li woke up in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the report.

Debris and broken glass were scattered more than 10 meters from the bakery and a fire broke out. Firefighters arrived soon after and put out the blaze.

One person died at the scene, the report said.

Authorities suspect the explosion was caused by a gas leak, but are still investigating, according to the newspaper.
