Ban on imports of mouthwash
IMPORTS of a popular mouthwash were suspended yesterday after Procter & Gamble announced a worldwide recall of the product, China's quality regulator said.
P&G China has advised consumers to stop using Oral-B Tooth and Gum Care Mouth Rinse with an expiry date between July 15, 2011, and June 30, 2014, because of possible microbial contamination.
The United States company said it had detected excessive microorganisms during an inspection of several batches of products.
The company said the contamination posed nearly no risk to healthy people, but might affect people with severely weakened immune systems.
A total of 35,892 bottles of the product in 350ml and 500ml sizes have been imported from Colombia to Chinese mainland, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
It ordered local inspection and quarantine authorities to suspend imports of all Oral-B mouthwash and enhance inspection on other mouthwash products.
Major supermarkets in Shanghai, including Tesco and Lotus, said they were removing the product from shelves after receiving notification from P&G.
P&G China said consumers can return products by posting empty bottles, proof of purchase and relevant personal information to a branch in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province.
A hotline number, 800-830-2608, posted on P&G China's official website will help customers with refunds from today, a company spokesman said.
"I've always been using the mouthwash and I'm so surprised that a big brand like this will have problems," one customer told Shanghai Daily. "I don't know if there is any safe product now."
