Bank offers internship to children of VIP clients

A Standard Chartered Bank office in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province allegedly offered the children of its VIP clients a priority for job internship and lured other candidates to make a savings deposit in the bank to get the internship.

According to a Xinhua report today, university students whose parents deposited more than 500,000 yuan (US$79,000) in the bank could get the internship.

Yang Hui, a Beijing student, said she narrowly failed the job interview and a bank executive told her to deposit 100,000 yuan in a savings account in the bank for at least three months to qualify for internship. She finally gave up.

The bank's recruitment files showed that only seven applicants got internship opportunities through interviews; other 20 were all children of the bank's VIP clients.

Guangzhou lawyer Liu Jicheng said the bank was suspected of using job internship to sell financial products. The practice violates China's Labor Law. He suggested that Yang report this to authorities to seek justice.
