Bank worker wearing ‘skin mask’ to steal money gets 5 years in jail

A bank employee who wore a realistic silica gel “skin mask” and took tens of thousands of yuan from client accounts from an ATM received a five-year prison sentence from a court in central China’s Henan Province, Dahe Daily reported today.

Wang Hai, a bank worker from Luoyang City, withdrew 65,000 yuan (US$10,666.50) in November 2012 using a counterfeit card while wearing a human “skin mask.”

The Luoyang Laocheng District Peoples’ Court sentenced him to five years plus a 50,000-yuan fine after he was convicted on credit card fraud charges recently.

He was caught during his third theft on November 20, 2012 after a bank officer discovered the fraud.

He stole card information using monitoring software to access his computer in the bank office and then bought a slip-on mask with a wig on the Internet for 2,540 yuan.

The mask closely resembles human skin with such features as eyebrows, stubble and wrinkles. Such masks are available online priced from 600 yuan to 5,000 yuan, the newspaper reported.

An increasing number of crimes using skin masks have been reported in recent years and police suggest tougher regulations on the sale of masks are needed, including requiring name registration for purchasers.
