Banned ingredients found in noodle dish

THE owners of three illegal rice noodle workshops in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, have been detained for allegedly adding banned cancer-causing ingredients in the noodles.
Yunnan rice noodle soup, which is also known as “crossing the bridge” noodles, is a popular cuisine in the province. It is not only a regular dish for the locals but is also promoted as must-try dish for travelers.
On Tuesday, officials confiscated 5 tons of rice noodles from three dirty and shabby workshops. Tests revealed they contained cancer-causing sulfur dioxide. Sodium metabisulfite, one of the four additives seized from the workshops, can damage the kidney and lead to poisoning resulting in death.
The three owners have been detained for allegedly producing and selling harmful food, the local Chuncheng Evening News reported yesterday.
One of them, surnamed Ning, ran his workshop in the Changpo Community. When local food and drug officials stepped into the roadside workshop, they were taken in by the strong smell and found workers making the noodles without wearing gloves and tops.
Investigators also found insects in rice and several bags of additives. They learnt that Ning and his elder brother bought the workshop, without a license, at 126,000 yuan (US$20,248.2) last October and recruited 14 workers from their village, including their relatives.
