Barcelona stars may miss Beijing friendly
EIGHT Barcelona soccer players who helped Spain win the World Cup may miss their club's friendly match with Beijing Guo'an next month at Beijing's "Bird's Nest."
But Lionel Messi, who played for Argentina in the World Cup and quit the tournament after the quarterfinal, will likely lead the August 8 match at Beijing National Stadium, today's Sina.com.cn reported.
The eight missing players are Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Pedro Rodriguez, David Villa and goal keeper Victor Valdes who may get a longer vacation than other Barcelona peers.
According to Spanish media, Barcelona will have two matches with Sevilla on August 14 and 21 for the Spanish Super Cup. To better prepare for the formal matches, the eight main players may skip the friendly match in Beijing.
Barcelona reportedly planned to have the players also skip Spain's match with Mexico on August 11, according to local media.
