Basement rape case accused on trial

A MAN stood trial in Hubei Province on Tuesday for allegedly raping four females, including two teenagers he kept chained in a basement for a year.

They were rescued when a repairman discovered a note they had hidden in a television set sent for repair and alerted police.

At Wuhan Intermediate People's Court, Zeng Xiangbao, 39, admitted raping four women and attempting to rape seven others in Wuhan, the provincial capital, between July 2007 to May this year.

But Zeng denied raping the two teenagers, aged 16 and 19, as frequently as prosecutors claimed, Changjiang Times reported yesterday.

Prosecutors demanded the death penalty but the court did not hand down a verdict.

The two teenagers, whose names were not revealed, said they were tortured, starved and sexually assaulted in the basement in Wuhan's Qingshan District last year.
