Battered girl has surgery to fix face

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl will start undergoing free surgery in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, to repair her face after being abused by her adoptive mother.

The girl arrived in the city last Thursday from her hometown in Shantou's Chaoyang District, also in Guangdong, today's Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The girl was born to a poverty-stricken family and adopted out shortly after her birth because they had another two daughters and a son.

But last year her cousin found her with hardly any face and battered ears after repeated beatings, and doctors discovered she had five broken ribs and a damaged liver and spleen.

Her adoptive mother has been sentenced to three years in jail with a reprieve of four years.

In the first-phase operation, doctors will rebuild her nose and recreate her ears.
