Battery factory workers upset by blood lead test

MORE than 100 workers of a battery factory in Changzhou, a city in Jiangsu Province, were feeling upset after having a physical check in a local hospital which showed their blood lead level is much higher than the normal level, the Yangtze Evening News reported.

The doctors said these workers had blood lead levels ranging from 280 microgram per liter to 400, compared with the normal level of under 100. The factory had arranged a physical test for another 200 workers yesterday and the local government has started an investigation.

A worker surnamed Huang told the newspaper that the factory belonged to a Taiwanese investor. They went to take the physical test voluntarily after hearing that the factory was going to be relocated.

Huang said a pregnant worker surnamed Zhang fainted in the factory on June 22 and a blood test showed her blood lead level was beyond the standard, which drove other workers to take the same test. The factory fired Zhang afterwards.

Initial investigation showed that at least 70 workers were touching the poisonous metal every day at work. They were advised to take another blood test in a more advanced hospital.

Local authorities said if any illegal practice was found in the factory, it would punish the management seriously. The factory has suspended its production.
