Battery plant boss detained for high lead levels
THE boss of a battery plant in Deqing, Zhejiang Province, was detained yesterday after more than 300 people in the area were found to have high levels of lead.
Some 99 children were among those with excessive levels of lead in their blood and 53 people were hospitalized.
Eight local officials are being investigated over lax supervision after authorities discovered the Zhejiang Haijiu Battery Co improperly disposed of lead waste, the local authority announced today.
The Ministry of Environment wrapped up a week-long investigation by concluding that the battery company was to blame for the 322 villagers' excessive blood lead levels, according to the information office of Deqing County.
Some 53 patients, including 27 children, have been receiving hospital treatment from a specialist medical team since Sunday. The remainder will be treated over the coming days.
Their medical bills will be covered by Zhejiang Haijiu Battery Co Ltd.
The investigation showed the plant, which had 1,000 employees, was built too close to nearby homes. It also found employees exposed to lead in work didn't take strict sanitary measures before leaving their workplace.
