Battle against pollution will go on
A CHINESE official said yesterday the government will continue to fight against air, soil and water pollution with great determination.
“The government can never slack off on the task of reducing pollution,” Minister for Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian said yesterday at a national meeting in Beijing.
Zhou said they are targeting a 2 percent annual reduction in air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, chemical oxygen demand and ammonia nitrogen from 2013.
He added a 5 percent cut in oxynitride emissions has been targeted for this year compared to 2014.
Air pollution in Beijing, neighboring Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province will be the ministry’s top priority, the minister said.
Zhou also said they will create effective mechanisms and tools to evaluate local governments on their efforts to reduce pollution.
The ministry will also work hard to protect the safety of drinking water, while also controlling water pollution in major river valleys.
A soil pollution survey will be completed and pilot sites for dealing with contaminated land will also be set up nationwide, according to the ministry.
