Beaten girl, 3, dies in hospital

A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl with severe head injuries died early yesterday after spending nearly a week in a coma in a south China hospital.

Her mother has been accused of involuntary manslaughter, police said, and is under police supervision.

The girl had been on life support in a critical condition in Nanshan Hospital in Guangdong Province's Shenzhen City since last Tuesday night, her doctor told news Website sznews.com today.

Her mother was caught by police the following night while attempting to visit the girl in hospital. Police said the mother, surnamed Hong, is likely to be exempt from criminal punishment because she is two months pregnant.

Earlier reports alleged the mother often beat her daughter. Since her daughter's death, she has threatened to commit suicide, said the girl's father surnamed Liu.
