Beaten-up fraud busters want retrial

A BEIJING court has ordered a disgraced medical professor and his four hitmen to compensate two science fraud busters 500 yuan (US$75) and 2,100 yuan (US$315) each for assaulting them.

The amount of compensation is much lower than the victims' request. Fang Zhouzi, a renowned science columnist and a whistleblower for academic frauds and plagiarism, said he would discuss with his lawyer whether to make an appeal because he was expecting 4,000 yuan in compensation.

Another victim, Fang Xuanchang, a financial journal editor, didn't make comments. He asked for 100,000 yuan in compensation in the lawsuit.

Xiao Chuanguo, the convicted medical professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, said he would follow the court order given at a previous trial.
The two Fangs have pledged to apply for a retrial after a higher court in Beijing rejected their appeal and upheld its sentence of five-and-a-half-month jail term against Xiao.
