Beauty parlor check leads to crackdown

A NATIONWIDE network profiting from counterfeit cosmetic injections and unlicensed medical devices has been busted in east China’s Zhejiang Province.

Police caught 56 suspects and seized nearly 50,000 fake medicines worth more than 100 million yuan (US$16.23 million) in Ningbo.

Included in the haul were counterfeit versions of Botox and hyaluronic acid shots, both popular as anti-wrinkle treatments.

The crackdown was triggered after a routine check on a Ningbo beauty parlor on March 11, when police and food and drug inspectors found more than 500 fake or unlicensed products, yesterday’s Zhejiang Daily reported.

Police subsequently targeted four supplies. Two were found to be smuggling beauty products from South Korea or Western countries, while the other two made fake Botox.

Further investigations uncovered a network involving more than 30 provinces and cities.
