Bedridden man sues over missing stomach
A MAN is seeking 930,000 yuan (US$1.36 million) in compensation from a central China hospital which removed nearly all his stomach without telling him.
The surgery has allegedly resulted in severe anemia due to malnutrition and led to the man being bedridden for 14 years, today's www.dahe.com reported.
Ruyang County People's Court in Henan Province's Luoyang City yesterday accepted the lawsuit filed by Liu Fengtao.
Liu was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer that could lead to stomach cancer by the Ruyang County People's Hospital in September 1996, when he was a 17-year-old high school student. His doctor Zhang Wuxuan told him he would have about one-third of his stomach removed, he said.
But after the surgery Liu became extremely weak and had been bedridden since.
In 2002, his health deteriorated and was sent to Luoyang No.2 People's Hospital where he was found to have nearly all his stomach removed. Liu was diagnosed with severe anemia due to malnutrition.
Zhang, now the head of Ruyang hospital, defended his surgery yesterday. He told Dahe.cn that he had to remove most of Liu's stomach because of the acuteness of the emergency. Liu's symptoms could lead to cancer, he explained.
But he failed to notify Liu's parents or get their consent, the report said.
