Beichuan denies selling tickets to see quake ruins

BEICHUAN County government denied charging admission for people to see the ruins of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, saying the 30 yuan (US$4.7) fee is for bus fare, site maintenance and insurance, the Jiangxi TV reported yesterday.

It said the state didn't provide fund for the maintenance of the earthquake memorial site, and it ran a shuttle bus service to ensure the safety of visitors.

Beichuan County was devastated in the massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the western Sichuan Province and the neighboring Gansu and Shaanxi provinces on May 12, 2008, leaving 69,227 dead and 17,923 missing. In Beichuan, more than 20,000 people died or went missing.
