Beijing Metro fares to soar ... to 3 yuan
THE cost of traveling on public buses and subway trains in Beijing will rise on December 28, the city’s transport authority said yesterday.
On the Metro, the standard fare of 2 yuan (33 US cents) per trip will go up by 50 percent to 3 yuan, while journeys of more than 6 kilometers will cost 4 yuan.
Trips of more than 12km will be dearer still, it said.
Despite the increases, students and transport card users will remain entitled to discounts.
On the buses, the basic fare will double to 2 yuan for trips up to 10km, and rise by 1 yuan for every 5km after that.
The fare adjustments were made after a series of public hearings. The transport authority said it hopes they will help to improve the distribution of Metro passengers and reduce its cost burden.
It said also that it might introduce a discount policy next year, especially for people traveling during off-peak hours.
With the new rules, owners of transport cards will receive a 20 percent discount on all trips made after they have spent 100 yuan in a month. When the total spend surpasses 150 yuan, the discount rate rises to 50 percent.
Card holders can also enjoy 50 percent discounts on buses, while students get a 75 percent discount on all bus trips.
Beijing has 17 subway lines. The new policy will be apply to all but the airport line.
