Beijing bids for 2015 IAAF World Championships

BEIJING will bid against London and the Polish city of Chorzow to host the 2015 IAAF World Championships in athletics.

The event's organizer, International Association of Athletics Federations, announced it has received letters of intent from the three cities by the deadline of March 10, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

Before voting for the final result in November at Monaco, IAAF will visit the three cities for onsite evaluation, the report said.

The candidates must introduce a local enterprise or company as the official sponsor for the event which will shoulder a sponsorship fee of US$28 million from 2010 through 2015. This new policy was introduced to combat the global economic setback, the newspaper said.

The 2009 Berlin IAAF World Championships in Athletics attracted 500,000 spectators and was broadcast to 212 countries and regions.

Analysts are optimistic about Beijing's capability to win the bid, referring to its successful organization of the 2008 World Olympics and its outstanding sports venues including the renowned "Bird's Nest."

Meanwhile, Shanghai will sign an agreement with the IAAF within weeks to host the Shanghai leg of the 2010 IAAF Diamond League, Shanghai organizer told Oriental Morning Post.

Shanghai native Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang will take part in the competition on May 23.
