Beijing blames blood shortage on rains and Red Cross crisis
Beijing is facing a critical blood shortage as 10 percent fewer people donated blood recently than a year ago due to frequent thunderstorms and the image crisis of the Red Cross Society of China.
There are merely 4,000 units of blood stored in the capital's blood bank, only 33 percent of the ideal level, while the clinical use of blood is increasing at a rapid rate of 10-15 percent, the Beijing Morning Post reported today.
The Red Cross Society suffered a major image crisis after a young woman claiming to be the general manager of Red Cross Commerce flaunted her lavish lifestyle on the Internet in June. The scandal discouraged many people from making donations, including blood, said Liu Jiang, director of Beijing Blood Center.
He told the newspaper that the recent rainy weather was also a factor for a dwindling number of blood donors.
To fill the shortfall, the Beijing Blood Center has deployed six more mobile blood collection vans in the city and extended their working hours.
