Beijing checks reveal problem of poor maintenance
MORE than a quarter of Beijing’s 188,000 elevators and escalators (26.1 percent) have been in service for over a decade and are prone to malfunction, the capital’s Administration of Quality and Technology Supervision said after the conclusion of safety inspections.
Dangerous equipment had been repaired, monitored or taken out of service, the administration said.
An official said risks were most severe in old apartment buildings, with the main problems being aging components and poor maintenance.
Of 49 accidents last year, only eight were due to equipment failure, the administration said. Poor maintenance is nonetheless a major issue partly due to price competition in the maintenance business, which has lowered the quality of service.
