Beijing court tries man who stabs his son in fatal brawl

A father stood trial in Beijing on murder charges that he stabbed his 20-year-old son to death when the boy was arguing with his twin sister over a new laptop.
The defendant surnamed Liu, 52, collapsed in the courtroom and cried for five minutes after the trial began in the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court yesterday, the Beijing News reported.
Liu said his son was quarreling with his twin sister who refused to let him use her laptop on January 18. Liu took away the laptop as punishment. This infuriated his son who yelled obscenities and threatened to throw a chair at him. Liu took a knife and stabbed his son in the chest.
His son died before the ambulance arrived.
Liu said he didn't mean to kill him but had lost control at hearing those dirty words. He said he actually loved his son and bought him a cell phone worth 4,000 yuan (US$619) to cheer him up because his son failed to find a job.
Liu's ex-wife said Liu was acting under the influence of alcohol when the family tragedy occurred. The court didn't hand down a verdict yesterday.
