Beijing court upholds life sentence for corrupt official
A former Beijing district official who was sentenced to life in prison last year for taking bribes and embezzling public funds of 26.42 million yuan (US$4.2 million) had his appeal rejected by a higher court, today's Beijing Times reported.
Yan Yongxi, 49, former vice mayor of Mentougou District in western Beijing, was described by local media as "No. 1 corrupt official in Beijing" for the huge amount of money he obtained illegally between October 2003 and April 2008.
The paper said Yan took advantage of his post as Mentougou vice mayor in charge of relocation projects to pursue benefits for himself and for those who bribed him.
In a span of six years, Yan took 5.82 million yuan in kickbacks and 6.6 million yuan in bribes, and embezzled 14 million yuan of public funds, the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said in September 2011 after sentencing Yan to life imprisonment.
The court said Yan forged relocation compensation agreements and defrauded the government of land-use fees. He also embezzled public money and lent it to a company in April 2006.
After the verdict was made, Yan pleaded not guilty and denied all the accusations. He appealed to the Beijing Higher People's Court, which rejected his appeal and the appeals of his accomplices and his mistress who is also involved in Yan's case.
