Beijing flights cancelled due to thick fog
More than 50 domestic and international flights have been cancelled, while another 200 delayed at the Beijing Capital International Airport by this afternoon as a thick fog shrouding China's northern and central regions today.
Almost all the more than 50 flights between Shanghai and Beijing were delayed after 9am when visibility dropped below 1,000 meters in the capital city. Five flights have been cancelled.
There were only two passenger planes departing from Beijing arrived at the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport from 9:30pm to noon when visibility decreased to only 100 meters.
The visibility returned to about 1,000 meters in the afternoon, but takeoff and landing are still affected, the airport said.
The country's top meteorological authority issued a yellow alert at 6am, suggesting people in fog-affected areas to cancel outdoor activities as the fog will worsen the regions' air quality.
Fog and haze will decrease visibility to within 1,000 meters in some parts of the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Liaoning and Zhejiang, with visibility of less than 200 meters in some areas, the center said.
The center said that a cold front will sweep north China over the next three days, bringing winds and a temperature drop of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and northeast China.
Some of these regions may see rainfall or snow over the next three days, the center said.
