Beijing flights delayed, cleaner dies
Some 30 flights between Shanghai and Beijing were canceled and dozens of others were delayed due to a severe thunderstorm in the capital yesterday afternoon that also claimed the life of one airport cleaner.
Flight cancellations and delays are also expected on the route today, the country’s busiest domestic route, the Beijing airport authority said.
In total, more than 300 flights were canceled or delayed in the capital while numerous passengers were stranded at the airport.
A cleaner was struck and killed by lightning when working on the tarmac at the Beijing airport at 8am yesterday. Police said when they found the body he was still holding a mobile phone.
Only Beijing was worse than Shanghai for flight delays in the first six months of the year, according to a survey of 35 major airports around the world.
Pudong International Airport had a punctuality rate of 28.7 percent while Beijing Capital International Airport was the world’s worst at 18.3 percent, US-based aviation data provider FlightStats said yesterday.
FlightStats records a delay if an aircraft fails to take off within 15 minutes of its scheduled time.
