Beijing hits back at Britain, US
China’s Foreign Ministry has rejected criticism from Britain and the United States on Hong Kong affairs.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday that Britain should stand up for the rights of people in Hong Kong. Speaking in parliament, he said it was important that people in Hong Kong enjoy the freedoms and rights set out in the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 that agreed to return the city to Chinese sovereignty.
Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents have been fully guaranteed since the city returned to China in 1997.
In Washington, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Wednesday that the US was concerned by reports of the police actions and urged a “complete investigation.”
Hong said the protesters had blocked roads, obstructed police and severely interfered with the social order.
