Beijing hospital on strike after doctor was hacked by patient

THE colleagues of a female doctor who was hacked 17 times by an angry patient held a one-hour strike at the Beijing Tongren Hospital this morning, demanding a better and safer working environment.

Doctors and nurses displayed a banner with signatures as they urged the government to severely punish the attacker and ensure medical workers' safety and dignity.

A donation box was also put out in the hospital's eye, ear, nose and throat department for 43-year-old Dr Xu Wen, who was in stable condition after a nine-hour surgery but she probably won't be able to practice medicine for a long time.

Xu, a leading doctor in the department, was chopped in her two arms, left leg and the back after the throat cancer patient surnamed Wang attacked her with a kitchen knife.

The 54-year-old man has been arrested by Beijing police. He was believed to be Wang Baoming, a Beijing calligrapher. He attacked Xu for her unsuccessful surgery to remove his laryngeal cancer in 2006.

Wang said in his blog that the surgery not only failed but also deprived him of the function of speech and smell. He sued the hospital and Xu but the case was never handled by the court.

Wang claimed that he was a disabled man and the only thing he wanted to do was to take revenge on Xu.
