Beijing link gets go-ahead

An inspection team consisting of 30 noted Chinese engineering academicians and experts have given the green light for the Shanghai-Beijing high-speed rail line to open.

The engineering inspection team traveled in a CRH380 train along the line to examine its signalling systems, the operation of the trains and the energy-saving and environmental protection measures that had been incorporated in the project.

As a result of their investigation, the team determined that the high-speed rail line had met operational requirements.

On May 11, the high-speed rail service began a month-long trial to finalize preparations for commercial operation.

The Ministry of Railways has yet to announce an official date for the start of the service, but previous reports have said late June or July 1.

Travel time between the cities, which are 1,318 kilometers apart, should be around five hours, and 90 pairs of bullet trains will be in operation.

China plans to spend 2.8 trillion yuan (US$431.7 billion) building 30,000 kilometers of rail lines over the next five years.
