Beijing man faces fine for drone mishap
A BEIJING man on a visit to Taiwan is facing a fine of up to NT$1.5 million (US$48,150) after a drone he was using to take aerial pictures hit Taipei 101, the tallest building there, according to a report in yesterday’s United Daily News.
The drone, which the man surnamed Yang said was worth 30,000 yuan (US$4,833) was blown into the side of the skyscraper on Tuesday by high winds.
Officials said Yang was breaking the local civil aviation rules by flying the drone higher than the limit of 60 meters and within 6 kilometers of Taipei’s Songshan airport.
It was the third case of its kind recently. On June 15, a drone which hit the tower was left unclaimed. Five days later another drone came down on a 58th floor balcony. Its owner has claimed it from police.
No one was injured in any of the incidents and the building wasn’t damaged.
In Shanghai, current rules cover drones weighing more than 7 kilograms. The Model Aeronautics and Vehicle Association of Shanghai said the city was working to update rules to cover all drones.
Concerns include drones spying on individuals, straying too close to sensitive areas or creating hazards.
Under the new rules, expected to be introduced this year, owners would need a license to fly drones above 120 meters.
