Beijing man paralyzed by train crush wins 260,000 yuan
A court has ordered the Beijing Metro operator to pay 260,000 yuan (US$37,744) to a man who was paralyzed after being smashed into a train door by the crowd crush on a Metro commuter line, the Legal Evening News reported on Wednesday.
The payout is a fraction of the almost 2 million yuan he sought.
Wang Tao, 55, was waiting at the platform at Tiantongyuan North Station, the terminal station of Line 5, at 7am on January 15, 2014. He was pushed by other commuters scrambling to get on the train and hit the opposite train door when the train arrived, the report said.
Wang was paralyzed in all four limbs. He sued the Metro operator for 1.9 million yuan for negligence.
Changping District People’s Court ruled that although the Metro operator didn’t directly caused the accident, it had failed to ensure safety during morning rush hours, and was therefore partially responsible.
