Beijing metro operator scraps WCup station name plan
Beijing’s Metro operator has canceled its plan to name subway stations after World Cup teams due to public complaints it might confuse.
Beijing MTR Corporation Limited had announced on Saturday that stations on Line 4 and Daxing Line would be temporarily named after World Cup teams to celebrate the world’s biggest soccer tournament.
Above the regular station name, a sign printed with country name and national flag was added. Online photos showed Xidan Station was named Spain, Gongyixiqiao Station became Portugal and Xizhimen Station was called Argentina.
The company wrote on weibo.com this afternoon that it decided to remove the signs after receiving complaints from netizens. It said they had to ensure operational safety.
