Beijing official gets life for 42m yuan in bribes and frauds
A Beijing district official was sentenced to life in prison today for taking bribes and embezzling public funds totaling nearly 42 million yuan (US$6.58 million), the Beijing News reported.
Yan Yongxi, 47, engaged in bribery and embezzlement when he was deputy mayor of the city's Mentougou District, the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court said today.
His lawyer said the penalty was too heavy but didn't indicate whether Yan would appeal to the higher court.
Yan has been described as "the most corrupt official in Beijing" by local media. From October 2003 to July 2007, Yan accepted 5.56 million yuan in cash and three houses worth 1.24 million yuan from developers whom he helped to win government contracts.
Between 2006 and 2008, Yan forged relocation compensation agreements to defraud the government of 5.8 million yuan. He also collaborated with Zhao Tao, a property valuator, to embezzle public funds for relocated homes and enterprises.
Yan also lent 30 million yuan of embezzled money to his mistress' company in April 2006. It is his mistress, Mao Xudong, who disclosed most of Yan's bribes. Mao was sentenced to 20 years, and Yan's two other accomplices, Yan Yongcheng and Li Xin, were jailed for 13 years and 10 years respectively, the newspaper said.
