Beijing official gets life sentence

A FORMER vice district director of Beijing has been sentenced to life in prison for taking bribes.

Xu Shuying is the third senior official from Beijing's Haidian District to be punished for accepting bribes, according to Beijing-based Caijing magazine.

The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court found Xu guilty on Friday. Xu, 68, was among several senior Beijing officials involved in serial real estate corruption cases.

Xu used to be in charge of urban construction in Haidian District when he served as the district's vice director.

The indictment said Xu had accepted two apartments from Liu Jun, chairman of a Beijing real estate company, between 1995 and 2003.

Xu helped Liu in two development projects in return.

Xu also accepted three other apartments from real estate companies between 1996 and 2002, and sold them for profit.

A disciplinary department was tipped off in March last year that Xu had accepted an apartment from Liu.

Xu later confessed during the investigation, which won him a mitigated punishment from the court, the report said.

Liu Jun was put under investigation in summer 2006 for his involvement in the corruption case of Beijing's former vice mayor Liu Zhihua.

Liu Jun is accused of offering bribes and tax evasion in Hebei Province, but no court ruling has been issued yet.

Two of Xu's colleagues in Haidian have also been punished.

Zhou Liangluo, former director of Haidian, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in March 2008 for taking bribes, while Xing Zhiguo, Haidian's another former vice director, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for accepting bribes and concealing overseas bank deposits in September 2007.
