Beijing official sacked over son鈥檚 lavish wedding

A VILLAGE official in Beijing has been sacked for holding lavish wedding celebrations for his son at a time when central government is urging frugality.
Ma Linxiang, deputy director of Qingheying Village, broke a district ban on government officials spending excessively on banquets and created a negative public influence, local officials said yesterday.
However, Ma didn’t misuse public funds, said the Chaoyang District Party disciplinary watchdog.
Three days of wedding celebrations were held, culminating on Sunday, when 400 guests attended a banquet at Beijing’s prestigious China National Convention Center.
On the menu were luxury dishes such as sea cucumber and abalone, while entertainment was provided by popular folk performers, reported The Beijing News.
More than 10 luxury cars were used to ferry the bride, groom and other members of the wedding party.
The celebrations cost 1.6 million yuan (US$261,440) in total, the newspaper said.
Ma said he and the bride’s parents paid for the celebrations, Xinhua news agency reported.
Ma said he spent 200,000 yuan on two banquets in the village on Friday and Saturday, while the bride’s parents paid for the finale at the China National Convention Center.
His daughter-in-law is from a rich family in Jiangsu Province and her parents wanted a grand banquet, Ma said.
“The bride’s parents were determined and I failed to dissuade them,” Ma said.
