Beijing official says Chinese cooking styles also to blame for air pollution
A Beijing official was harshly criticized today after partly blaming the capital’s air pollution on Chinese cooking habits during a TV interview.
Zhao Huimin, director with the Beijing Foreign Affairs Office, said yesterday the city would carry launch eight measures to improve air quality as part of preparations for next year’s APEC summit. He said the measures would include factory shutdowns and population restraints.
Later yesterday, Zhao told Dragon TV “Chinese cooking habits also contributed to PM2.5 density. We hope citizens cooperate with us to clean the air.”
The remarks triggered public anger.
Some people wrote online that Zhao was implying Chinese cooking would be banned during the APEC period.
Other posters used sarcasm to criticize Zhao. They wrote Beijing might use a lottery system, which was used during the 2008 Olympics to restrict car use, to allow some families to cook on odd numbered days and others on even numbered days.
