Beijing plant bottles ‘purified’ water from the tap for years
A BEIJING water plant has been using tap water for four brands of water labeled as purified water and mineral water, the Legal Evening News reported.
The sanitary license of the plant, Beijing Fupinyuan Drinking Water Plant in Pigezhuang Village of Beizang Town, expired last year, so it used food quality standards codes from other plants, the report said. The plant in the Daxing District of Beijing produces the standard-sized barrels used for home and office water dispensers.
The plant works at night in a bid to avoid local government inspectors. A worker employed for over four years at the plant said that he had never seen the active carbon and filter screen of the equipment changed, the report said.
The plant sells 600 to 700 barrels of water each day, the plant’s supervisor said. Sales top more than 1,000 daily in summer.
