Beijing police reveal details over death of man who allegedly died after being detained for buying sex

BEIJING police today revealed more details about what happened to the man, who was caught for allegedly buying sex and later pronounced dead after a confrontation with the police, after his family urged for details over the death.

Lei Yang, 29, was seen leaving a foot massage store, not far from his home, in Changping District in Beijing, around 9:14pm on Saturday after police received a tip-off saying the store was offering sex service and went there for investigation, Changping police said.

Police said they stopped him, identified themselves to him and questioned him. But he tried to run away and started resisting violently, during which he bit the police and smashed a police video recorder, police said.

Police said they managed to subdue him and carried him onto a police vehicle. But en route to the police station, he broke free and scurried from the back row to the front seat. He allegedly kicked the driver, forcing a stop, and he took the chance to jump off the car. But police caught him again.

As he still violently resisted police enforcement, police said they had to handcuff him. But soon they found he looked sick and they immediately sent him to hospital. He received emergency treatments at 10:05pm and was pronounced dead 50 minutes later, police said.

Police also caught five others, one male and four females, from the store. According to their accounts and evidences collected from the scene, police said they had confirmed that Lei paid 200 yuan for sex at the store, police said.

An autopsy will be taken to find what caused his death, police said.

A female foot massage store employee, one of the five detainees, said in front of the camera that she had helped him masturbate, and he had asked whether there’s a back door to leave but she still led him to exit from the front door, Beijing Television reported today.

A lawyer, surnamed Peng, representing Lei’s family, said Lei was a physically healthy adult before the death. It was suspicious that police didn't specify why and how he felt sick, and his family found blood in his mouth and bruises on his forehead, Chengdu Business Daily reported.

“We don't focus on whether he went whoring or not,” Peng said, “We want to know why such a simple case cost a life and whether duty-related violations existed in the enforcement.”
