Beijing prosecutors to probe 5 police officials over custody death
BEIJING prosecutors on Wednesday launched an investigation into five police officials following the death of a man in custody, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The five police officials are from Dongxiaokou police station in Changping District, Beijing People’s Procuratorate said, without revealing their names.
The Ministry of Public Security stressed in a meeting on Tuesday that there would be no cover-up of police misconduct and those found guilty will be punished as per law.
Earlier police statements said Lei Yang, 29, was caught on May 7 during a police raid on a massage parlor, which reportedly was offering sex service. Lei had allegedly resisted arrest. He later fell sick and died despite receiving emergency treatment in hospital, police said.
On May 17, Lei’s wife, surnamed Wu, approached the Beijing prosecutor for a probe into the police officials who conducted the raid. She accused them of abusing powers, helping forge evidence and causing intentional injury.
