Beijing puts the brakes on car plates

BEIJING will issue only 240,000 new car plates annually to ease traffic jams in the nation's capital, the city's government said today.

Car buyers will have to obtain a license plate by drawing lots before they can drive, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said at a press briefing today. The city will hold "lucky draws" for 20,000 plates each month.

The policy will take effect on January 1, 2011, the transport commission said.

More than 700,000 news cars were sold in Beijing this year and the city now has more than 4.7 million cars, according to the commission.
