Beijing putting its Olympics bid in focus
With little more than two months to go before the 2022 Winter Olympics vote, Beijing still feels it has much to tell the world.
The city government has invited 20 photographers from around the world to shoot various aspects of the capital, including its natural scenery, historic sites and residents’ lives.
“Beijing is a beautiful city with lovely countryside. It is also an Olympic city. I hope the photographers can record the life of Beijing and tell how its citizens welcome the Winter Olympics,” said Wang Hui, deputy secretary general of the bidding committee.
George Doupas, from Greece, said he was planning to take photos of Beijing’s traditional courtyards. “I wish Beijing a successful bid,” he said.
Thanks to favorable weather conditions and improved air quality, the photographers are expected to produce some great pictures from their weeklong tour around the capital.
Last Thursday, the city’s environmental protection bureau announced that air quality had improved in the past four months, with the average density of PM2.5 (airborne particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter) dropping by 19 percent compared to the same period last year.
Despite such progress, the bidding committee remains realistic about its prospects.
Xu Jicheng, deputy director of its press and communications department, said that Beijing and Almaty, the other candidate city, were an equal match.
“It is a 50-50 chance for Beijing as the IOC President (Thomas) Bach put it. I think each city has its own strong points and weak points,” Xu said.
The IOC will vote on the bids on July 31 in Kuala Lumpur.
