Beijing residents protest city maglev train project

HUNDREDS of Beijing residents took to the street yesterday, protesting a maglev train project that will go passing near their homes.

They held banners reading "no maglev, more health." The residents from seven residential compounds in Beijing's Haidian District gathered on Sunday to sign a petition letter against the planned S1 line, a medium speed magnetic levitation train, Beijing Times reported today. Residents are concerned with the radiation once the train in operation.

An assessment on envrionment safety was started following the suspension of the rail construction in June. The conclusion of the assessment came out on August 2, telling the public that the maglev train "will not affect the health of nearby residents."

The residents there refused to accept the conlusion. One resident Li Shuyong said he doubted whether the assessment was impartial because the assessment was made by China's Academy of Railway Science, which was affiliated to the Ministry of Railways, the builder of the S1 line.
