Beijing school sued for student's schizophrenia

PARENTS of a Beijing college student who developed schizophrenia after the school probed him for "inappropriate" posts on an online forum were demanding 1.7 million yuan (US$262,310) in compensation at court.

The mother surnamed Wu said her son suffered delusions of being stalked and often behaved in destructive ways at home after Beijing Wuzi University restricted his movement for investigation, Beijing News reported today.

The student, whose identity not revealed, was reportedly not allowed to go home in 2006 when school authorities linked him with two inappropriate comments on the school forum, which he denied.

Wu said the university also threatened to disqualify him for graduation if he didn't admit making the comments.

The student was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2008. Wu filed a lawsuit demanding a compensation of 700,000 yuan from the school, but the case was rejected by the court for lacking evidences.

A university official denied the allegations, saying no link could be built between the students' mental disorder and the school's actions.
