Beijing shuts migrant children schools, some unhappy

STUDENTS of four schools for migrant children in Beijing's Haidian District have all been admitted to local public schools after authorities shut down their schools because they had no license.

These children will enjoy the same treatment as their Beijing classmates when the new semester starts next month, their parents were told this week.

The city's education authorities will shut down about 30 unlicensed schools for migrant children to get rid of unsafe facilities before the new semester begins, the Beijing News reported today.

About 30,000 students will be affected by the closures but their transfer plan has not been made public, drawing criticism from some parents.

An official at the Haidian District Education Bureau promised that every student will be enrolled in a public school, the paper said.

A man surnamed Wang was worried that his child would have to walk 5 kilometers more to the new school because he and his wife have no time to send their child to school every morning, the paper said.
