Beijing staggers work hours to ease traffic
FROM next week, about 810,000 workers in Beijing will start their workdays half an hour later in a plan by city government to ease traffic, today's Beijing Daily reported.
From Monday, workers with city government departments and their affiliated organizations and institutions, as well as state-owned enterprises, will work from 9am to 6pm, instead of starting at 8:30am, Beijing's vice mayor Ji Lin said yesterday.
Workers with central government departments and affiliated organizations, schools, hospitals and shopping malls will keep their normal working hours.
The government will also encourage people to work flexible hours or work from home if possible, according to Ji.
Ji said the government hopes staggering working hours will help ease traffic jams, as a similar plan did during the Olympic Games in August 2008.
